A Dala horse, or a Dalecarlian horse, is a traditional wooden statue of a horse, hand-carved and hand-painted in Sweden. In the old times, Dala horses were used as toys for children, while today, they have become symbols of Sweden! There are several types of Dala horses, with different features, shapes and colors, depending on the locality where they were produced. However, one particular style has become more common and more widely known to the world - the Dala horse painted in bright red with details in white, green, yellow and blue. Today, traditional Dala horses are produced in Dalarna, a region known as "the heart of Sweden", and the most popular base colors of the wooden horses are red, blue, white and black!
A Dala horse is carved from a single piece of wood, that comes from Swedish forests. Artists use pinewood to create beautiful and long-lasting statues.
The horse statue is plunged into paint several times, which is its base color. The Dala artist paints the detailed ornaments by hand, and with great care!
The last step is covering the Dala horse statue with a final coat of lacquer and that is it! The Dala horse is ready to travel the world!
