LIGHT GREEN OR DARK GREEN?
The dark green is the one most people choose. It reads almost forest green against wood and warm neutrals, and the white kurbits work with its touches of red and yellow shows clearly against it. It is the closest thing we have to the traditional red horse in a colour that does not announce itself.

The light green is softer - closer to sage in daylight - and the pattern is painted in white and pale green only, without the red. It disappears more politely into a pale room.

Side by side they are a pair, and a good many people buy both.

WHICH SIZE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
- 7-10 cm - shelf, windowsill, desk, or a small gift
- 13 cm - our most popular size by a wide margin. Fits a bookshelf or mantelpiece and reads clearly from across a room

WHY GREEN INSTEAD OF RED
The red Dala horse is the one everybody knows. Green is for rooms where red would fight the palette - it still reads as Swedish folk art, but as something chosen rather than brought back from a trip.

WHAT IS A DALA HORSE?
The Dala horse comes from Dalarna in central Sweden, where wooden horses have been carved and painted for centuries - the oldest surviving example dates to the mid-1500s from Vastra Fors, and the first written record of horses being sold dates to 1624. The flowing floral decoration is called kurbits, a folk painting tradition from the same region. The Dala horse became Sweden's most recognised symbol after the 1939 New York World's Fair, and it is still made and painted in Dalarna today.

ABOUT OUR HORSES
We work directly with established workshops and independent artists in Dalarna. Every horse is painted by hand, which is why yours will not be identical to the photograph - the brushwork varies from piece to piece, and smaller sizes carry a simpler pattern than larger ones. That variation is the point: each one is an individual object, not a printed copy.
